2008

2008 is here. Spent Christmas at my mum’s. I was surprised how much she recycles by kerbside collection - the council collects plastics, as well as glass, tins, cardboard and paper on a weekly basis. She only puts out one black bag for rubbish collection (2 adults in household). She doesn’t have a compost bin (worried about rats and mice), but my brother takes the lawn clippings every so often to the recycling place (they receive a voucher for each trip - 3 vouchers = one bag of compost). Our local recycling collection doesn’t collect plastic (other than plastic bottles) or cardboard. Some areas in the county collect green waste. We have a compost dalek in the garden so peelings and shredded paper (need a new shredder, I like the manual ones rather than those that use up electricity in the running) go there. However, a lot of food gets wasted. Small person is very fussy with food. Ok, so the crusts from toast and sandwiches go to the birds, but after that, well, it ends up in the bin (as does a lot of packaging). I was reading Nicky Scott’s books on Composting, and Reduce Reuse Recycle. I was intrigued by the E.M. Bokashi system for fermenting foodwaste which can then be buried in the ground or composted (no longer attractive to rats). I don’t fancy the green cone - perhaps too much work at first - digging somewhere for the basket to go and am not sure if we have enough room in back garden for another compost bin. Tumblers - well, they look like too much hard work to turn, plus I don’t think we have room in the back garden for it.
